DOC LOUNGE: Before Father gets Back

The event is part of the Festival of the Century 2020

Under the theme headline Woman in recent conflicts, DOC LOUNGE Aarhus presents a coming of age documentary by director Mari Gulbiani. The film depicts the everyday life of two girls – a life characterized by radicalism and the absence of men, sons and fathers who have gone to war.

Come to a remote mountain village in Georgia, where women, children and old men keep the village going because the younger men are drawn to the front in Syria.

Mari Gulbiani’s Before Father gets Back starts in a darkened classroom, where craggy walls are used as a movie canvas. Among the students are the two girls Iman and Eva. Two Muslim girls, for whom the movie experience becomes a turning point and inspires them to take the camera and film their everyday lives.

Before Father gets Back follows the two girls in a small society where radicalism and the fear of loosing their loved ones who are a thousand miles away dominate. It is a story of an exposed life, of drama and frequent struggles, but also of the  ethics and morals in a life on the edge.

After the film, film director Mari Gulbiani talks about the making of the film and answers questions from the audience. The talk is in English.
